2 in 3 secondary schools in Tower Hamlets are full or oversubscribed in Year 7 this term, research by the Liberal Democrats has revealed.
In total 12 secondary schools in the area are either full or over capacity in Year 7 - an increase from 9 the previous year.
The figures are based on responses to Freedom of Information requests to local councils by the Liberal Democrats.
It comes after analysis by the Local Government Association warned that over 125,000 children across the country face missing out on a secondary school place by 2022/23.
Liberal Democrat Elaine Bagshaw commented: "These figures expose the growing school places crisis in Tower Hamlets.
"Our classrooms are too overcrowded and our teachers are too overworked. The government needs to invest more to relieve pressure on our local schools, create more places and ensure no child is left behind.
"The Liberal Democrats want to ensure every parent can send their child to a decent school in their local area and give every pupil has the best possible start in life."
